As a Chinese teacher from Israel, what I like to do is to compare the Hebrew letters with the Chinese character with the same meaning as the ancient pictogram. The root of the word Aleph is also connected to many other words in the Hebrew language. Because of this system of assigning numerical values to letters, every word has a numerical value. There is an entire discipline of Jewish mysticism known as Gematria that is devoted to finding hidden meanings in the numerical values of words.
The letter Aleph is one of the most important and noteworthy letters in the Hebrew alphabet for a number of reasons, some spiritual and some practical. As you might have noticed in the previous lesson and in the exercises, the shuruq can only be placed on a Vav, otherwise it would be the same dot that distinguishes Bet from Vet (it’s called dagesh, “emphasis”). The chart below has the block, script, Rashi script and the numeric values for all the Hebrew letters.
At the very least, it is a really good example of how we like to tell ourselves the same story over and over again in different ways. The word אֵל has somehow found its way into the name of one of the most powerful and probably the most iconic character of American Pop-Culture – Superman. While on earth he goes by the name of Clark Kent, on his home planet of Krypton he was named Kal-El. The authors of Superman, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster were both Jewish, and therefore it is quite reasonable to assume they knew El was the Hebrew word for god and chose it for symbolic purposes. Whether or not they also knew the ancient relation to the concept of force is a different question. When you take a look at how the letter Alef was written in Ancient Hebrew and in Ancient Phoenician from which it has originated, the resemblance to an ox is undeniable.

For example, the number 18 is very significant, because it is the numerical value of the word Chai, meaning life. Donations to Jewish charities are routinely made in denominations of 18 for that reason. The letter Alef, shown in red, is used to illustrate the position of the points relative to the consonents. The letters shown in purple are technically consonents and would appear in unpointed texts, but they function as vowels in this context.
The letter occurs very regularly at the end of words, where it represents the long final vowels o/a or e. In the middle of the word, the letter represents either a glottal stop between vowels , a long i/e (less commonly o/a) or is silent. - Is in enclitic positions, it is pronounced no/na (again west/east), rather than the full form eno/ana.
- I have been thinking a lot about what the topic of the first post should be.
- It is believed to have derived from the Hebrew word אָלוּף .
- The Hebrew word for ram is אַיִל (A’il) and it was a common symbol of power and idol of worship among many ancient cultures in the region.
The picture to the right illustrates the Hebrew alphabet, in Hebrew alphabetical order. Note that Hebrew is written from right to left, rather than left to right as in English, so Alef is the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet and Tav is the last. The Hebrew alphabet is often called the “alef-bet,” because of its first two letters. In set theory, the Hebrew aleph glyph is used as the symbol to denote the aleph numbers, which represent the cardinality of infinite sets. This notation was introduced by mathematician Georg Cantor. In older mathematics books, the letter aleph is often printed upside down by accident, partly because a Monotype matrix for aleph was mistakenly constructed the wrong way up.

For instance, the root ח-ש-ב , ח-ש-ד , ח-ש-ק and ח-ש-ש (fear / afraid) all start with Chet and Shin. Therefore, it will not be far-fetched to assume they all derive from the primal root ח-ש which still exists, and it means to sense or to feel. Another good example can be found in the roots ד-ח-ה , ד-ח-ף , ד-ח-ס and ד-ח-ק which all start with Dalet and Chet.
Additional letters of the Hebrew alphabet are available in a particular order. The aleph is formed by two yods, one to the upper right and the other to the lower left, joined by a diagonal vav. All vowels (except for “i”) are marked by more than one symbol, with the most being “a” with 4 different ways to represent it (so far we’ve learned two). Don’t be intimidated by this, though, because the rest of the symbols are based on the ones we’ve already learned . Files are available under licenses specified on their description page.
The number 11 would be rendered Yod-Alef, the number 12 would be Yod-Bet, the number 21 would be Kaf-Alef, the word Torah (Tav-Vav-Resh-He) has the numerical value 611, etc. The only significant oddity in this pattern is the number 15, which if rendered as 10+5 would be a name of G-d, so it is normally written Tet-Vav (9+6). The order of the letters is irrelevant to their value; letters are simply added to determine the total numerical value. The number 11 could be written as Yod-Alef, Alef-Yod, Heh-Vav, Dalet-Dalet-Gimmel or many other combinations of letters.

I’m studying alef hebrew Hebrew and this really gave me another perspective. I’m also looking forward to watching the video you recommended. This means that inside Alef, the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet, we can see a god (אל) and a mouth (פ or ף).
